| | | The Innovation Law Center at the Syracuse College of Law is a recipient of part of a $15 investment by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to form an Interior Northeast Region Hun (IN I-Corps). Ten universities will make up the new Hub whose purpose is to foster innovation and entrepreneurship in STEM programs in underserved regions. Coordinated by Cornell University, the goal is to create a cohesive innovative ecosystem that delivers inclusive models of education and workforce training designed for and by entrepreneurs in rural areas. | | | The goal of the initiative is to support domestic inventions and manufacturing. The $2 billion investment will include the Departments of HHS, Energy, Defense, NSF, and Agriculture. The plan is to leverage biotechnology to expand domestic biomanufacturing, foster innovation, bring new and expanded bio-products to market, train the next-generation of biotechnologists, drive regulatory innovation to increase access to biotechnology products, advance bio economy measurements and standards, invest in biosecurity innovations, and facilitate data sharing to advance the bio economy. For more information click here. | | | As part of an effort to prevent national security risks posed when foreign entities acquire some companies in biotechnology, energy, and quantum computing fields. President Biden signed an executive order strengthening the foreign investment review process. The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) is authorized to review certain transactions involving foreign investment in the United States. | | | The United States Patent and Trademark Office’s new Patent Public Search (PPUBS) tool took effect on September 30th. PPUBS replaces Public-Examiner’s Automated Search Tool (PubEast), Public-Web-based Examiners Search Tool (PubWEST), Patent Full-Text and Image Database (PatFT), and Patent Application Full-Text and Image Database (AppFT). Patent and pre-grant publication links in PatFT and APPFT will be terminated. The new search tool aims to be more convenient, remote-friendly, and robust for full-text searching. | | | Cornell will lead the newly established Interior Northeast Region NSF Innovation Corps (IN I-Corps) supporting science and technology entrepreneurship in rural areas. Cornell will use the $15 million five year grant to collaborate with nine other academic institutions, six of which are in New York State including Rochester Institute of Technology, Binghamton University, University at Buffalo, Syracuse University, and University of Rochester. The hub officially launches January 1, 2023. More details here | | | State University of New York’s Technology Accelerator Fund (TAF) invested $300,000 in faculty-led projects to advance the development of eight innovations. The funding aims to branch commercialization to innovation funded by government sponsored programs. Some of the projects benefitting are a drug discovery software from University at Albany, a cyber security education game-based platform from SUNY Canton, and a blood cancer treatment technology from Stony Brook University. | | | SyracuseCoE is accepting proposals from new and current industry partners for a second round of Innovation Fund grants. Awards of up to $10,000 for up to five projects. Companies at all SyracuseCoE partner levels are invited to apply. Project proposals must address a challenge in the areas of indoor environment quality, clean and renewable energy, or water sources. Grant applications are being accepted through Thursday, October 20. For more information click here. | | | The New York Fund for Innovation in Research and Scientific Talent provides a maximum of $1 million grants to eligible institutional applications. The purpose is to support world class talent at state medical schools to accelerate translational research. The grant program is open exclusively to New York State medical schools. The research funded must have the potential for significant life sciences economic development benefits in New York State. The application deadline is January 23, 2023.
