| | | The Innovation Law Center and designated New York State Science and Technology Law Center was part of the NYS Innovation Summit. ILC staff and faculty were able to connect with programs and businesses from all over the state about the research it offers. The ILC also reconnected with startups they’ve completed early-stage research for. Among them were neARbl, Capro-X, Free Form Fibers, Electroskip, Garwood Medical Devices, LLC, In Your Ecosytem, Mosais Microsystems, Quadrant Biosciences, re:Charge, Triton Bio, and WellBuildingControl. | | | Earlier this year, President Biden and the European Commission President Von der Leyen announced a combined European Union-U.S. Data Privacy Framework. On October 7, 2022, the Executive Order was officially signed by President Biden. The agreement will help to regulate data that is transferred between the U.S. and the European Union for commercial purposes. For more information, see this fact sheet. | | | Morgan Stanley has agreed to pay $35 million to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission after they alleged that the company improperly disposed of computers and servers from their offices that contained highly sensitive and confidential information. This case highlights the risks of improperly wiping data before getting rid of any server, as this can cause the data to get into unauthorized hands. To read more, click here. | | | A report published in May 2022 entitled Reckoning with the U.S. Role in Global Ocean Plastic Waste responds to the bipartisan Save Our Seas Act 2.0, which requests information about the United State’s role in plastic waste. The report finds that that only 5% of recycled plastics are repurposed, a new low. This number is only predicted to drop further in the coming years as more plastic is produced. | | | Following the signing of the 2022 CHIPS Act, Micron Technology, Inc., one of the world’s largest semiconductor companies and the only U.S. manufacturer of memory announced plans to build the largest semiconductor fabrication facility in Clay, New York. This center will create 50,000 jobs for New Yorkers. Among these job opportunities includes 9,000 high paying Micron jobs. This center is part of Micron’s strategy to increase American-made leading-edge DRAM production to 40% of the company’s global output over the next decade. For more information, click here. | | | A group of Clarkson professors were awarded a Higher Ed Extended Reality (XR) Innovation Grant from Unity and Meta Immersive Learning. Meta is investing $150 million to help develop more metaverse creators. The group was one of eight grant winners out of 267 submissions. The award will be used to develop an instructional tool that uses Virtual Reality to create a new learning experience for neuroscience students. | | | The Koffman Southern Tier Incubator is a state-of-the-art facility located in Binghamton, New York that offers world class resources, such as office spaces, mentors, and various programs, to growing startups. Those looking to take advantage of the Koffman Southern Tier Incubator’s resources can do so from anywhere in the world with a $125 per month membership fee. Funding is available through various programs within the center as well as through a variety of grants. For more information, visit their website. | | | The New York’s FAST NY Shovel-Ready Grant Program aims to develop sites and attract large employers. Empire State Development will provide $200 million in grants to prepare and invest in building potential work locations for high tech, renewable energy, life sciences, agribusiness, optics, transportation equipment, materials processing and industrial machinery manufacturing. The sites could also be good for warehousing, distribution, and logistics. These grants are open to municipalities and municipally designated non-profit economic development organizations.
