Greetings from Syracuse!

As our excitement grows for the launch of the David B. Falk College of Sport on July 1, I’m equally thrilled to share with you in this newsletter several examples of the outstanding work that’s being done by our students and faculty during this year of transition.

From our new partnership with the Major League Baseball Players Association to Jonah Soos winning the Sport Analytics National Championship, our sport, nutrition, and exercise science programs are at the top of their games as we prepare to become the first college on a high-research activity campus to focus on sport-related disciplines.

And by joining outstanding schools and colleges across campus – and with initiatives such as the Genovese Scholars Program that’s highlighted below – our human dynamics programs are positioned for growth and success as they enter a new era.

‘Truly A Superstar’

Sport analytics major Jonah Soos won the undergraduate National Collegiate Sports Analytics Championship and helped Syracuse University to a second-place showing in the team standings. “He’s truly a superstar,” says Sport Analytics Program Director Rodney Paul.

Looking Back, Acting Forward

Public health majors Alyssa Sutherland and Tabitha Hulme were chosen as 2024-25 Remembrance Scholars who honor the Syracuse University students who died in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 in 1988. Watch this video to learn what this honor means to them.

Mind Over Matter

Can a person control a physical condition with their mind? Published research by Exercise Science Assistant Professor Kylie Harmon has found that targeted interventions during a prolonged period of immobilization may be able to preserve muscle strength.

The Power of Play

Human Development and Family Science major Jonida Konjufca has launched the Syracuse University chapter of the nationwide non-profit Project Sunshine, which facilitates play sessions at children’s hospitals. Learn more in this story and video.

Game Changer

The recent opening of the new Gaming and Esports Center in the Schine Student Center elevates both the student engagement opportunities at Syracuse University and the innovative esports academic programming offered jointly by Falk College and Newhouse.

‘The Athlete’s Gut’

Patrick Wilson, author of the internationally known book “The Athlete’s Gut: The Inside Science of Digestion, Nutrition, and Stomach Distress,” is the featured speaker for the 2025 Ann Selkowitz Litt Distinguished Speaker Series April 1.

Trans Support Day

This year’s Trans Support Day hosted by the Marriage and Family Therapy Trans Team will be held April 5 in Peck Hall and is open to everyone. “The event is a celebration of you, and a place to connect with each other and be supported,” says Trans Team founder Deb Coolhart.

Agent of Change

As a 2025 Fellow of the Executive Leadership Institute at Clark Atlanta University, Falk College Associate Dean of Student Services Chandice Haste-Jackson is being nurtured as a visionary leader who is prepared to drive positive change for Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
