Josephine de Karman Fellowships

  • 31 Jan; The purpose of this fellowship program is to recognize and assist students whose scholastic achievements reflect Professor von Karman’s high standards.

Science, Technology, and Society (NSF)

  • Feb 2; The STS program supports research that uses historical, philosophical, and social scientific methods to investigate the intellectual, material, and social facets of the scientific, technological, engineering and mathematical (STEM) disciplines. It encompasses a broad spectrum of STS topics including interdisciplinary studies of ethics, equity, governance, and policy issues that are closely related to STEM disciplines, including medical science.

Google Summer of Code

  • Mar 12-27; A global program focused on bringing more student developers into open source software development. Students work with an open source organization on a 3 month programming project during their break from school.

Engineering Scholarships (ASME Scholarship Program)

  • Mar 15; The ASME Scholarship Program seeks to promote the art and science of mechanical engineering by encouraging outstanding students by relieving some of the financial burden of pursuing an engineering education.

Campus as Lab for Sustainability Grants (Syracuse University)

  • Apr 2; The program seeks proposals from faculty and students for projects that can advance Syracuse University’s Climate Action Plan (CAP), either by promoting reductions in greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs), directly or indirectly, or by increasing awareness within the campus community about climate disruption and environmental sustainability. Proposals from students must be sponsored by a faculty advisor, whose departmental administrator will handle disbursement of funds.

Data Science Fellowships (Cornell University)

  • A free advanced 8-week fellowship (think data science bootcamp) for MS or PhDs looking to enter industry. A variety of innovative companies partner with The Data Incubator for their hiring and training needs, including LinkedIn, Genentech, Capital One, Pfizer, and many others.

Collaboration for Unprecedented Success and Excellence (CUSE Grants, Syracuse University)

  • Jan 31; The purpose of this intramural grant program is to enhance interdisciplinary collaborations, to grow the research enterprise and enhance scholarship at Syracuse University in order to increase extramural funding and high-quality scholarly output. The program is designed to support faculty in becoming competitive in securing external funding and sponsorship.

Broadening Participation in Engineering (NSF)

  • Feb 2; annually thereafter; The BPE Program is a Directorate-wide initiative dedicated to supporting the development of a diverse and well-prepared engineering workforce. Across every educational juncture (e.g., elementary, secondary, and postsecondary levels), efforts to improve engineering interests, preparation, connections, experiences, and opportunities among underrepresented groups is of major importance to BPE.

Academic-Industrial Partnerships for Translation of Technologies for Diagnosis and Treatment (NIH, R01)

  • Mar 8; May 25; Sept 25. The purpose of this FOA is to stimulate efforts to translate scientific discoveries and engineering developments into methods or tools that address problems in basic research to understand disease, or in applied research to assess risk, detect, prevent, diagnose, treat, and/or manage disease. Participating organizations: National Cancer Institute and National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering.

Inclusion across the Nation of Communities of Learners of Underrepresented Discoverers in Engineering and Science (NSF INCLUDES)

  • Apr 4; NSF INCLUDES is a comprehensive national initiative designed to enhance U.S. leadership in STEM discoveries and innovations by focusing on broadening participation in these fields at scale. All NSF INCLUDES Alliance proposals must be built upon a foundation developed by one or more NSF INCLUDES Design and Development Launch Pilot project(s). Partnerships based on more than one Launch Pilot are especially encouraged.

Cyberinfrastructure for Sustained Scientific Innovation (CSSI) – Data and Software: Elements and Frameworks (NSF)

  • Apr. 18; “Elements” awards target small groups that will create and deploy robust capabilities for which there is a demonstrated need that will advance one or more significant areas of science and engineering. Framework Implementations (either Data Frameworks or Software Frameworks) awards target larger, interdisciplinary teams organized around the development and application of common infrastructure aimed at solving common research problems faced by NSF researchers in one or more areas of science and engineering, resulting in a sustainable community framework serving a diverse community or communities.

Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement (RISE) (NIH, R25)

  • May 25; The over-arching goals of the NIH R25 program are to: (1) complement and/or enhance the training of a workforce to meet the nation’s biomedical, behavioral and clinical research needs; (2) enhance the diversity of the biomedical, behavioral and clinical research workforce; (3) help recruit individuals with specific specialty or disciplinary backgrounds to research careers in biomedical, behavioral and clinical sciences; and (4) foster a better understanding of biomedical, behavioral and clinical research and its implications. Defense Enterprise Science Initiative (DESI – DOD)

  • Feb 28; This is a pilot program that supports use-inspired basic research performed by university-industry teams. Research areas of interest are related to unmanned areal systems and include integration of mechanical, power, electronic and sensory subsystems into a package, incl. data fusion and communication.

International Research Experiences for Students (IRES – NSF)

  • Due dates vary depending on track (Jan – Sep); The IRES program supports international research and research-related activities for U.S. science and engineering students.
  • Track I: IRES Sites projects engage a group of undergraduate and/or graduate students in active high quality collaborative research at an international site with mentorship from researchers at a host lab.
  • Track II: Advanced Studies Institutes are intensive short courses with related activities that engage advanced graduate students in active learning and research at the frontiers of knowledge.
  • Track III: New Concepts in International Graduate Experience projects propose, implement, and evaluate creative ideas for catalyzing the development of globally engaged U.S. scientists and engineers at the graduate student level.

National Science Foundation Research Traineeship (NRT) Program

  • LOI Window: Nov 26 – Dec 6; The NSF NRT program is designed to encourage the development and implementation of bold, new, and potentially transformative models for STEM graduate education training. The NRT program seeks proposals that explore ways for graduate students in research-based master’s and doctoral degree programs to develop the skills, knowledge, and competencies needed to pursue a range of STEM careers.
