College of Law Celebrates Commencement

College of Law Commencement

This month, we celebrated the College of Law’s 119th commencement with 148 J.D. and 27 LL.M. graduates who are now members of our alumni community. Judge James E. Graves, Jr. L’80, G’81 delivered an inspiring and heartfelt commencement address encouraging our graduates to be kind and diligently partake in the “pursuit of happiness” as they travel whatever career path they choose. Chair of the College of Law’s Board of Advisors Marc Malfitano L’78, other Board members, and President of the Syracuse University Law Alumni Association Carey Ng L’02 joined me in welcoming graduates to our diverse and supportive group of alumni from all over the world.

During the University commencement on Sunday, I was honored to present Doctor of Laws degrees to Frank Bisignano, Chief Executive Officer of First Data Corp., and the legendary Vernon E. Jordan, Jr., national civil rights leader and public policy advisor who delivered the commencement address that day. I encourage all of our alumni to view the College of Law and University’s commencement programs.

Law in London 40th Anniversary

This summer, we will celebrate the 40th year of our Law in London externship program. Law in London is the leading summer legal externship program offered by an American law school in the bustling, global center that is London. In connection with the anniversary and to more clearly distinguish the program from study abroad programs offered by some law schools, we will unveil a new name and logo for the program’s next 40 years.

To further highlight this special anniversary, the College of Law is also hosting a number of special programs and events from July 3-5. In addition to tours of London and the House of Lords, and various receptions, the Law in London celebration will include a panel program on contemporary issues in sports law, moderated by SU Professor and Chief Executive Officer of Tactic Counsel Genevieve Gordon. Panelists will include:

Frank W. Ryan IV L’94, U.S. Chair, Intellectual Property and Deputy Chair, Global Media, Sports and Entertainment Sector, DLA Piper

Catherine Beloff, Director of Legal and Government, British Horseracing Authority

Kevin Plum, Director of Legal Services, The Premier League

Come to London and join us for our anniversary events!

Students In the News

I continue to be impressed by the wide-ranging accomplishments of our students, inside and outside of the classroom. While the breadth and depth of their achievements are as diverse as the students themselves, I call attention to a couple of notable examples:

Under the direction of Professor Robin Paul Malloy, four students participated in the “Issues in Local Zoning” Workshop for Onondaga County zoning officials. The students served as presenters on a variety of zoning topics during the four-hour program.

Lauren Henry L’17 received the New York State Bar Association 2017 President’s Pro Bono Service Award.

Christopher Clark, a rising 3L, was named the inaugural recipient of the Emil M. Rossi L’72 Scholarship Award. This award will be made annually to a rising 3L who participated in an intercollegiate trial competition in his second year and demonstrated excellence in trial advocacy. Christopher is headed to Baylor at the end of the month where he will represent the College of Law as a competitor in the nationally acclaimed Top Gun program.

Sarah Ballard L’17 received the Onondaga County Bar Association Award for contributing to the relationship between the College of Law and the community through service in a law clinic.

Make Your Mark

Syracuse University has challenged each of SU’s Colleges and schools to recruit additional gifts by June 30 in support of their annual funds. For the College of Law, these new gifts will help us to provide scholarships to attract and retain the best students and ensure that they can focus all of their energies on their legal studies. In turn, the matriculation of these highly qualified students makes a positive impact on our US News rankings.

Make Your Mark and support “Orange Edge,” the College of Law’s Financial Aid Account.
