APRIL 2017

Dean's Dispatch for Alumni

From the desk of Dean Boise

Syracuse University Commencement Ceremonies Just Ahead!
In my first Dean’s Dispatch, I shared the great news that Judge James E. Graves, Jr. L’80, G’81 will serve as our Commencement speaker on May 12, as we bid our Class of 2017 farewell. I hope you all join me in congratulating this talented class and welcoming them to our outstanding network of alumni as they begin their professional journeys.

SU Chancellor Kent Syverud recently announced that civil rights activist, public policy advisor, and business executive Vernon E. Jordan, Jr. will deliver the 2017 University Commencement address. On this occasion, I will have the privilege of awarding Mr. Jordan an honorary Doctor of Laws. I am honored to do so in recognition of Mr. Jordan’s lasting impact on the civil rights movement and social justice. I look forward to hearing his address as he draws on the broad array of his experiences in social activism, non-profit leadership, and business to inspire our graduates.

Honoring Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman
I was honored to attend the unveiling of the official portrait of recently retired New York State Court of Appeals Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman in Albany. Chief Judge Lippman is a longtime friend of the College of Law. Thanks to him, the New York State Court of Appeals heard four cases here at Dineen Hall, and he held his public hearing on civil legal services here. The invitation-only unveiling was attended by many state and national legal dignitaries, including U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

Success for Intercollegiate Moot Court Teams
Our Moot Court Honor Society intercollegiate teams completed a very successful spring season of competitions. The feedback our coaches received about the skills of our students was impressive and reflects well on the classroom training they receive at the College of Law, as well as their hard work and the hours of dedicated support they receive from our volunteer coaches. You can read more about their results and accomplishments here.

Faculty In the News

Three College of Law faculty members have received significant honors from the University for their teaching excellence: Professor Sanjay Chhablani was awarded the Laura J. and L. Douglas Meredith Professor of Teaching Excellence, while Associate Professors Todd Berger and Cora True-Frost received the Teaching Recognition Award sponsored by the Meredith Professors. Only two professors at the University were awarded the Meredith Professorship, and only six faculty members campus-wide were selected for the Teaching Recognition Award. These honors are an outstanding accomplishment both for the professors who were honored and for the College of Law.

At a gala ceremony at the OnCenter on April 11, College of Law Professor Arlene Kanter received the Champion of Independence Award from ARISE, a regional independent living agency in Central New York. This award recognized her extraordinary commitment to access, independence and full inclusion of people with disabilities. Professor Kanter also recently contributed comments on the Supreme Court’s decision in Endrew F. v. Douglas, a case in which she, along with College of Law and Syracuse University students, faculty and staff, contributed to an amicus brief.

Professor Travis Lewin

Professor Emeritus Travis Lewin will receive the Stetson University College of Law Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Advocacy during its Teaching Advocacy Skills Conference in May. I cannot think of another individual so deserving of this recognition. Professor Lewin continues to make a lasting impact on our advocacy program. Please join me in congratulating him!

I am also pleased to share that three of our faculty members have received outstanding placements for their most recent work. Associate Professor of Law Lauryn Gouldin’s article “Defining Flight Risk,” has recently been accepted by the UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO LAW REVIEW; Associate Professor of Law Andrew Kim’s article “Immigrant Passing” has been accepted by WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY LAW REVIEW, and Associate Professor of Law Nathan Sales’ article “Privatizing Cybersecurity” will appear in the UCLA LAW REVIEW.

A Trip to South Korea

College of Law Korean alumni

In March, I spent a very productive week in South Korea with College of Law LL.M program founder Professor Aviva Abramovsky, Director of International Programs Andrew Horsfall, and Assistant Dean for Advancement and External Affairs Sophie Dagenais. We convened a number of meetings and events to deepen existing relationships and develop new initiatives and programs with alumni and friends. Our meetings yielded strategic partnerships with two universities, discussions with members of the Korean Supreme Court on our Visiting Scholars Program, development of a curriculum that will allow Korean-trained lawyers and non-lawyers alike to sit for the Washington, D.C. bar, and more.

Most important, we were able to get better acquainted with more of our over 130 successful and prominent College of Law alumni who are making an impact throughout the legal community in Korea.
