Communication Skills with Ben Erwin, The Writing Center

Wednesday, October 17th, 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m., Lyman Hall 114

In this small group setting, we’ll work on our written communication skills related to careers and internships. Ben Erwin, Writing Center Administrator, will lead students in an interactive session throughout the hour. Registration is required.

Negotiation and Communication Skills Seminar for Women Grad Students and Postdocs in STEM with Evangeline J. Downie, George Washington University

Wednesday, October 17th, 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m., Bird Library 114 (Peter Graham Scholarly Commons)

Dr. Evangeline J. Downie received training in negotiation from the American Physical Society with support from the National Science Foundation (NSF). APS professional skills seminars are designed for students and postdocs. Participants in the Negotiation and Communication Skills Seminar will learn and practice communication and negotiation skills in this highly interactive workshop. In this seminar, you will learn how to negotiate a graduate, postdoc, or professional position in academia, industry, or at a national lab, interact positively on teams and with a mentor or advisor, think tactically and achieve your professional goals!

Qualtrics Workshop III: Intermediate Question Design with Paul Bern, Research Data Services Librarian

Thursday, October 18th, 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m., online via Adobe Connect

Research Data Services of Syracuse University Libraries is offering a series of workshops on using the Qualtrics online survey software, which is available to Syracuse University faculty, staff, and students. Qualtrics enables users to create and distribute complex surveys and analyze responses from a single online platform. All workshops will be held via the web using Adobe Connect (you do not need to have Adobe Connect installed on your computer). In the third workshop in the series we will learn how to use skip and display logic to direct what our respondents see, as well as randomizing questions and possible responses.

Online Teaching and Learning: Challenges and Opportunities with Dr. Michael Morrison, Associate Director of Academic Service Centers, ITS

Friday, October 19th, 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m., Kittredge Auditorium, HBC

Teaching an online course is very different than teaching students face-to-face. Learning to effectively use instructional technologies is part of the challenge. So is interacting with students that you don’t see in person. This workshop will explore the unique challenges and opportunities in an online class and will provide strategies for delivering online content, engaging remote students, and creating an online conversation. Also covered will be techniques for assessing online students and methods for providing meaningful and timely feedback.

Funding Opportunities

Poster and Demonstration Awards (SIIM)

(Dec 14) Cash prizes are presented at the SIIM Annual Meeting for the best scientific posters and demonstrations on display. Attendees meet with the authors of the scientific posters and demonstrations and discuss the topics at hand.

For Faculty:

Enabling Quantum Leap: Convergent Accelerated Discovery Foundries for Quantum Materials Science, Engineering and Information (NSF)

(Nov 5) The Division of Materials Research (DMR), the Division of Mathematical Sciences (DMS), the Division of Electrical, Communications and Cyber Systems (ECCS), and the Office of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure (OAC) seek to rapidly accelerate quantum materials design, synthesis, characterization, and translation of fundamental materials engineering and information research for quantum devices, systems, and networks.

Advancing Informal STEM Learning (NSF)

(Nov 7) The Advancing Informal STEM Learning (AISL) program seeks to advance new approaches to and evidence-based understanding of the design and development of STEM learning opportunities for the public in informal environments; provide multiple pathways for broadening access to and engagement in STEM learning experiences; advance innovative research on and assessment of STEM learning in informal environments; and engage the public of all ages in learning STEM in informal environments.

Emerging Frontiers in Research and Innovation 2019 (NSF)

(Nov 29) This solicitation is a funding opportunity for interdisciplinary teams of researchers to embark on rapidly advancing frontiers of fundamental engineering research in two research areas: Chromatin and Epigenetic Engineering (CEE) and/or Continuum, Complaint, and Configurable Soft Robotics Engineering (C3SoRo).

Accelerating Research through International Network-to-Network Collaborations (NSF)

(Dec 21) The goals of the Accelerating Research through International Network-to-Network Collaborations (AccelNet) program are to accelerate the process of scientific discovery and prepare the next generation of U.S. researchers for multiteam international collaborations.

Radiation Biodosimetry Assays and Devices (NIH/NIAID)
