| | Although a hush has fallen over the classrooms and corridors of Dineen Hall without the 1Ls and 2Ls here, there is still plenty of activity going on. Many of you will remember early summer after graduation as a time for bar prep, so spare a thought and wish best of luck to our graduates who are hitting the review books, supported by faculty and staff, even as the days grow warmer and longer in Central New York. Faculty and staff are also hard at work on a number of initiatives this summer, including delivering or preparing for LondonEx and other externship programs, Orange Edge, 1L Orientation, Law Reunion Weekend, the first JDinteractive cohort, and more. This issue of the Dispatch will be the only one of the season, so I look forward to reconvening with you in the fall in time for the excitement and challenges of a new academic year! In the meantime, wherever you are, I hope you enjoy a wonderful and refreshing summer surrounded by friends and family. Thanking Carey Ng, and Welcoming New SULAA President Amy Vanderlyke Dygert In early June, Carey Ng L’02 ended his term as President of the Syracuse University Law Alumni Association (SULAA). During his tenure, Carey worked tirelessly to foster strong bonds of community among our alumni family, both at home and abroad. His pride as an alumnus and his can-do attitude are both remarkable—and contagious. Carey was instrumental in planning special events for students in New York City and always made time to return home to Syracuse for Convocation, Reunion, Commencement, and other celebrations. Under his leadership, the SULAA Board achieved 100% participation in the Law Annual Fund this year, an extraordinary accomplishment that bodes well for the College’s future and reflects the passion with which Carey embraced his role. It’s been an honor to work with Carey, and I thank him for his truly exemplary service. Taking the SULAA helm from Carey is Amy Vanderlyke Dygert L’06, G’03, G’06. Amy is Director of Copyright Services at Cornell University, where she drafts, negotiates, and reviews policies, contracts, and license agreements. Previously, she was an Attorney at Sugarman Law Firm LLP in Syracuse and also an Adjunct Professor at SU’s Newhouse School, where she taught regulatory, advertising, First Amendment, and other areas of the law to media students. In addition to her J.D., Amy holds master’s degrees in journalism and new media from Newhouse, and instructional design from SU’s School of Education. “I am thrilled and honored to be elected president of SULAA,” says Amy. “I am thankful for Carey’s leadership during the past two years and his creation of a board structure focused on actively engaging with the College. I am excited to continue this momentum to ensure that SULAA takes on meaningful challenges to directly support our fellow alumni, the College, and its students.” Please join me in congratulating Amy on her accession. I look forward to working with Amy and the entire SULAA board during her two-year term. - Congratulations to our newest SULAA Board Members: James P. - And a fond farewell and deep appreciation to Robert E. Futrell Jr. L’94, Michael Drayo L’01, Kevin J. Roggow L’05, and Aaron M. Tidman L’07, whose terms on the SULAA Board have expired. I thank each of them for their service, and I know I will be seeing them on and off campus often.

Your answers are a critical component in our “soup-to-nuts” review of courses, which will help us prioritize our current offerings and identify areas of the law that are becoming indispensable in the practice world. | | | | Making Connections in Korea In May, I had the privilege of returning to Seoul, Korea, for a few days, during which I met with strategic partners to expand College of Law programmatic goals and spent quality time with many of our alumni. I was joined by Esther Feng, who serves the University’s international alumni as Director of Development for Asia. I had the pleasure of playing in the Korean Law Alumni Association’s (KLAA) annual golf tournament and dining with about 20 of our alumni later that evening. At dinner, I was honored to receive, on behalf of the College, a generous financial gift from the Association, for which many Korean alumni had pooled their resources. Words cannot express my profound gratitude. Thank you to KLAA President Seuk Joon Lee L’99, G’00, Partner at Yulchon LLC, for his leadership in arranging this gift, which will be used to support Korean law students. We look forward to continuing this rich tradition of engagement and philanthropy. Many thanks to members of our College of Law Korean family! |

| Tenured & Promoted Faculty Members I am happy to announce that the SU Board of Trustees granted the following professors tenure as members of the College faculty at the Board meeting in May: - Todd Berger—Professor Berger is Director of the Criminal Law Clinic and Faculty Advisor to the Moot Court Honor Society. He received a Teaching Recognition Award from the University’s Meredith Professors last spring.
- Lauryn Gouldin—Professor Gouldin received the Res Ipsa Loquitur Award from the J.D. Class of 2018.
- Andrew Kim—Professor Kim’s paper “Deportation Deadline” was recently published in the Washington University Law Review.
- Cora True-Frost L’01—Professor True-Frost received the University’s Meredith Professors Teaching Recognition Award last spring and the Lucet Lex Mundum Award from the LL.M. Class of 2018.
Additionally, the Board promoted A. Joseph Warburton, who has a shared appointment with SU’s Whitman School, to full Professor of Law and Finance. His paper “Mutual Fund Capital Structure” was published recently in the Marquette Law Review. New Faculty Appointments Announced As we look ahead to the fall semester, I’m pleased to welcome the following new faculty to the College of Law family: - Jennifer Breen—Professor Breen joins the College of Law as a Faculty Fellow. She will teach classes in Administrative Law, Constitutional Law, and Property. Among her previous jobs before joining our faculty, Breen was a Judicial Law Clerk to the Hon. Rosemary S. Pooler, US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.
- Roy Gutterman L’00—An Associate Professor in the Newhouse School, Director of the Tully Center for Free Speech, and a law alumnus, Professor Gutterman has been awarded a courtesy appointment in the College of Law. Roy teaches the interdisciplinary Law, Politics, and the Media course.
- Lauren Monforte L’07, G’07—Professor Monforte returns to her alma mater as an Adjunct Professor, to teach Legal Interviewing and Counseling. She is an attorney at Lindenfeld Law Firm.

| | | | Alumna Samantha Pallini’s Pro Bono Scholars Resolution to be Considered at ABA Annual Meeting In recognition of the thousands of hours of pro bono service law students and graduates provide, the state of New York spearheaded its Pro Bono Scholars Program in 2014. Now, a recent College of Law grad is hoping that her resolution encouraging all 50 states to implement similar scholar programs will pass the House of Delegates at the ABA Annual Meeting. “We hope … to embolden law schools, courts, and bar associations nationwide to design and implement pro bono scholars-style programs in their respective states,” says Samantha Pallini L’18. Read more about Pallini’s work. | | | | Christopher Clark L’18 Participates in Top Gun Christopher Clark L’18 recently participated in the Top Gun National Mock Trial Competition held at Baylor Law School. Assisted by 3L Sara Fitzpatrick, Chris was one of 16 students invited to the competition, which is open to students with the best record in the American Association for Justice Student Trial Advocacy Competition and National Trial Competition. In this year’s competition, his second time on the elite roster, Chris made it through four rounds, bowing out in the quarterfinals. As Professor Travis Lewin reported, “He had quite a run.” Well done, Chris, and thank you for so ably representing the College. |

| Significant Alumni Milestones - Alan K. Halfenger L’93—Optima Partners has announced that Board of Advisors Member Alan Halfenger has been appointed Partner. In his new role, Alan will focus on the regulatory and compliance needs of private equity managers, hedge funds, broker-dealers, and global financial services firms.
- Joanna Geraghty L’97, G’97—Joanna has been appointed JetBlue’s new President and Chief Operating Officer. In this position, she will manage day-to-day airline operations, focusing on customer service, structural cost initiatives, and operational performance.

I am very proud of the support we receive from our alumni leaders. It is making a huge impact.
