| The weeks before final exams and Commencement are hectic. Often we do not have the time to look up from our textbooks or computers and pay attention to the wider context in which we teach and practice the law. But on April 9, I had the pleasure of speaking at a Naturalization Ceremony that showed us all the human side of the law. The Hon. Thérèse Dancks L’91 presided over the ceremony with grace and a keen sense of occasion in the Melanie Gray Courtroom ceremony, where we welcomed 52 new citizens from all over the globe, including 10 active military personnel. The accompanying four photos offer a glimpse of the event, and of the beaming pride of the new citizens and their families, but I encourage you to see more photos on our Facebook page. The Hon. John Katko L’88 and Hon. Joanne Mahoney L’87 attended the ceremony and spoke eloquently about the contributions immigrants make to this country. Chol Majok (representing state Sen. David Valesky), and Maria Maldonado-Lewis (representing Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh) urged the new citizens to take full advantage of the opportunities America gives them. Student Bar Association President 3L Sarah Wheeler welcomed the audience and participants, and three student singers—2Ls Alicia Loomis and Sam Buchbauer and 1L Chanan Brown—delivered a stunningly beautiful, harmonious, and patriotic soundtrack to the proceedings. This College continues to attract top musical talent! Applications Open for JDinteractive The College is now accepting applications—and receiving them, even ahead of a comprehensive marketing campaign—for our groundbreaking online J.D. program. The deadline for applications for the first cohort of students is Nov. 15, 2018, for matriculation in January 2019. The new program—called JDinteractive—is the nation’s first fully interactive online J.D. program to be accredited by the ABA. Explains Associate Dean for Research and Online Education Nina Kohn, “JDinteractive allows the College of Law to make our rigorous juris doctor program accessible to students who cannot reasonably attend a fully residential program. The program is designed to prepare students to succeed in a dynamic legal profession, and JDinteractive students will earn the same degree as our residential J.D. students.” |

| How You Can Help Curriculum Review Survey Our Academic Strategic Plan identified “enhancing the student experience” as critical to providing a forward-leaning, 21st century legal education that is responsive to the needs of employers. As an important step toward improving the academic experience, we are now engaged in a soup-to-nuts review of our curriculum. We are prioritizing our current offerings, and—with your help—we are identifying areas that are becoming critically important in the practice world into which our students will graduate. Your input is of the utmost importance, and greatly welcomed. Please take a few minutes to answer our short curriculum survey. It asks you about the classes that best prepared you for practice and about which areas of the law should be added to our curriculum. I look forward to reviewing your answers. BBI/ABA 21st Century Legal Profession Survey Burton Blatt Institute (BBI) Chairman Peter Blanck is soliciting participation in a first-of-its-kind survey that the Institute is conducting in association with the ABA. The research project examines the opportunities and challenges facing individuals in the legal profession of the 21st century, with consideration of women, minorities, people of differing sexual orientations and gender identities, people with disabilities, and others. Writes Peter, “The 15-minute survey is anonymous and voluntary. It is approved by the Syracuse University Human Subjects Review Board. The findings will be used to help develop best practices in the legal profession.” We encourage you to participate in this groundbreaking research, and please pass the survey along to colleagues. Questions or comments may be addressed to Dr. Ynesse Abdul-Malak. |
