Welcome to the second issue of our electronic newsletter. It used to appear once a year, but we simply cannot wait to tell you about our new faculty, new programs, new courses, and of course new mathematical ideas generated by our faculty and students.

Department Welcomes New Faculty

In Fall 2018 the department welcomed four new faculty members: Assistant Professors Lee Kennard, Wei Li, and Jianxuan Liu, and an Assistant Teaching Professor Holly Grant.

Minghao Rostami

Faculty Achievements and Awards

Minghao Rostami received a 3-year NSF grant Fast Algorithms for Simulating the Collective Swimming of Microorganisms. Other recent award recipients were Leonid Kovalev, Loredana Lanzani, and Graham Leuschke.

Our graduate students, led by Casey Necheles, Mkrtich Ohanyan, and Erin Tripp, launched the Directed Reading Program with pairs undergraduate students with graduate mentors for a semester-long reading project.

Erin Tripp, a Ph.D. student of Professor Lixin Shen, has accepted an NRC Research Associateship which will support her work at Air Force Research Laboratory after graduation.

New Actuarial Science Course

The department introduced a new course Probability Models for Actuarial Science (MAT 528) which will be taught in Spring 2018 by Professor Thomas John. The course combines foundational techniques of probability with applications designed for future actuaries.
