| Faculty News | | | In Fall 2018 the department welcomed four new faculty members: Assistant Professors Lee Kennard, Wei Li, and Jianxuan Liu, and an Assistant Teaching Professor Holly Grant. | | | Minghao Rostami received a 3-year NSF grant Fast Algorithms for Simulating the Collective Swimming of Microorganisms. Other recent award recipients were Leonid Kovalev, Loredana Lanzani, and Graham Leuschke. | | | The 28th Annual Route 81 Conference on Commutative Algebra and Algebraic Geometry was held at Syracuse University on September 29, 2018. |

| Graduate Student News | | | Our graduate students, led by Casey Necheles, Mkrtich Ohanyan, and Erin Tripp, launched the Directed Reading Program with pairs undergraduate students with graduate mentors for a semester-long reading project. | | | Erin Tripp, a Ph.D. student of Professor Lixin Shen, has accepted an NRC Research Associateship which will support her work at Air Force Research Laboratory after graduation. |

| Undergraduate Student News | | | Andrew Cummings, Xinxuan Wang, and Xuerui Yang gave presentations on their Summer 2018 projects. | | | Kathryn Munster, a double major in Applied Mathematics and Information Management & Technology, has been named a 2018-19 Remembrance Scholar. | | | The department introduced a new course Probability Models for Actuarial Science (MAT 528) which will be taught in Spring 2018 by Professor Thomas John. The course combines foundational techniques of probability with applications designed for future actuaries. |
