| | This semester has flown by, much like Eric Dungey breaking out of the pocket. And like a well-executed football play, there’s much planning that goes on behind the scenes of a semester. So as Fall 2018 closes, let me again express my gratitude for all the help you have provided faculty, staff, and students throughout the term. That includes assisting with Orientation, Law Alumni Weekend, the Law Honors Awards, and Boost the ‘Cuse II, as well as our near-future highlights, such as the launch of JDinteractive and the expansion of the Externship Program into Atlanta. We could not reach these levels of success without you! Speaking of Eric Dungey, the Orange will play in a football bowl game for the first time since 2013, and Orange Nation is gearing up for a celebration. If you can make it to Orlando on December 27, I’d love to meet you at our “pep rally,” being held in conjunction with an admitted student event—details in the Alumni Events section below. 
In Alumni Events, you’ll also find information about SU game watch parties across the nation, so check to see if there’s an event in your area. Plus, there are details about our JDinteractive Convocation. I invite members of our alumni family to join the ceremony and lunch on January 7, and to meet a remarkable and impressive cohort of online JD program pioneers. No matter where you are going to be this holiday season, or where you’ll be watching the big game, may that which brings you happiness be in abundance this New Year. |

| | | | Seven Master of Laws Students Graduate On November 30, the College graduated seven Master of Laws in American Law students representing seven countries across four continents, in a moving Commencement ceremony in Dineen Hall. Fernando De Oliveira LL.M.’18 returned to Syracuse from Brazil to deliver inspiring words as the keynote speaker, assuring the new graduates that his master’s degree is already paying dividends for him in his role as a successful federal prosecutor. I reminded the graduates that newly minted citizens of Orange Nation don’t require a visa, and we want them to stay engaged with their College. Good luck, graduates. I look forward to catching up with you in your home countries, or wherever your careers take you. |

Evangelista is the Principal Assistant US Attorney (AUSA) in this office, which also happens to be the largest US Attorney’s Office in the country. | | | | College of Law Introduces the Inaugural Entertainment and Sports Law Negotiation Competition The College of Law’s Advocacy Honor Society and Entertainment and Sports Law Society will hold the inaugural intra-college Entertainment and Sports Law Negotiations Competition on April 10-12, 2019. The competition will be open to all College of Law students, regardless of class year. The final round will coincide with the Entertainment and Sports Law Society symposium on April 12. |

| | | | Senate Committee Recommends Adopting Uniform Act on Guardianship, Drafted by Nina Kohn The US Senate Special Committee on Aging has recommended nationwide adoption of the Uniform Guardianship, Conservatorship, and Other Protective Arrangements Act (UGCOPAA), for which Professor Nina A. Kohn served as Reporter, or principal drafter. The recommendation was made in a new report by the Committee—“Ensuring Trust: Strengthening State Efforts to Overhaul the Guardianship Process and Protect Older Americans”—released following a November 30 Capitol Hill hearing on “Ways to Strengthen Guardianship Programs.” | | | | Analyzing IP Policy at the WTO Professor Shubha Ghosh recently presented at the World Trade Organization IP & Trade Policy Today Seminar in Geneva, Switzerland, where he led a two-hour panel discussion about his new book, Exhausting IP Rights: A Comparative Law and Policy Analysis (Cambridge), with co-author Irene Calboli. The book examines, among other issues, how the “exhaustion doctrine” needs to be reformed to address digital technologies, such as e-books, streaming video and audio, and geoblocking of content. The authors gave their assessment of the doctrine (which permits the resale and reuse of products protected by IP rights) as it has been applied in the US, EU, China, India, and other jurisdictions. In mid-November, Ghosh spoke on a panel on universities and patent litigation at a meeting of the National Association of College and University Attorneys, and in January he will present on this topic at the AALS Annual Meeting in New Orleans. | | | | LITC Receives IRS Grant Congratulations to the Low Income Taxpayers Clinic (LITC) and its Director Robert Nassau. On November 29, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced a grant award to the LITC of $100,000 for 2019, the maximum award. Offering College of Law students the opportunity to learn how to advocate for taxpayers, LITC offers legal assistance to lower-income taxpayers who have collection, examination, and appeals controversies with the IRS. Students represent clients in IRS administrative proceedings and in judicial proceedings before the US Tax Court or in federal district courts. | | | | Nina Kohn Elected to the American Law Institute Professor Nina A. Kohn has been elected to the American Law Institute. Kohn joins judges, lawyers, and law professors from a wide variety of legal concentrations who have been announced as new members by ALI in December 2018. “I am proud to have been elected to ALI and to be part of the impressive group of attorneys, scholars, and jurists who comprise the newest group of members,” says Kohn. “I look forward to participating in ALI’s important work in the public interest, and to working with ALI to further the continuing development of the law.” | | | | Corri Zoli Attends UNSC Counterterrorism Special Meeting on the “Madrid Principles” On December 13, INSCT Director of Research Corri Zoli attended a special meeting of the United Nations Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee in the Economic and Social Council Chamber, UN Headquarters, NYC. The meeting discussed “Security Council Resolution 2396 (2017): A Review of the Madrid Principles,” a document that provides guidance to member states on stemming the flow of Foreign Terrorist Fighters across national borders, while staying compliant with human rights laws and norms. |

| Hire Orange! Spring Interview Program Now Accepting Registrations Is your firm looking for Summer 2019 interns, associates, or post-graduation full-time hires? The College of Law’s 2019 Spring Interview Program is now accepting employer registrations. This program allows employers to review resumes and interview first- or second-year law students for summer 2019 or academic year positions, or interview 3Ls for postgraduate positions. The Office of Career Services will work with your firm to host interviews at the College of Law from February through the end of April. If you cannot make it to Dineen Hall for interviews, we can accommodate you as a “Resume Collect” employer. Resume Collect lets employers conduct their interviews any time after January 15 at a preferred off-site location, or by phone or video call. Spring Admitted Student Mixers Planned Admitted Student Mixers for spring 2019 will be held on March 21 and April 11, 2019, from 5-7 p.m. at Sitrus on the Hill, located inside the Sheraton Syracuse University. Become a Class Ambassador Syracuse University’s second-annual day of giving—Boost the ’Cuse II, held on October 25—proved that when Class Ambassadors challenge classmates to give, they respond. A significant number of the College’s 492 donors that day were from classes that were issued a personal challenge by an alumnus. One Class Ambassador was Mark O’Brien L’14. “I was the recipient of an alumnus’ generosity, and the least I can do is return the favor—albeit in some small way—to the next class of future lawyers,” O’Brien says. “I take pride in doing good for my alma mater, and if I can inspire my classmates to share that pride, even better.” During Boost the ‘Cuse II, O’Brien challenged his classmates via social media to make a gift that he promised to match. This inspired three first-time gifts. In this year’s Giving Book you’ll find alumni participation rates broken out by class year. Consider that if one Ambassador from each class—like Mark—could inspire three new donors to make a gift, the College’s overall alumni participation rate would increase by nearly 2%! Let’s give the new students the warmest possible welcome into our family as they visit Syracuse for a weeklong residency. | | | | SPIN Auction to Be Held January 26 The 26th Annual Syracuse Public Interest Network (SPIN) Auction will take place on January 26 at Dineen Hall. The SPIN Auction raises money to encourage law students to pursue careers in public interest law. SPIN members worked in legal service organizations, nonprofit legal organizations, and government agencies throughout the country. The theme of this year’s auction is the “Golden Age of Hollywood”. Doors open and the silent auction begins at 6 p.m., with the live auction beginning at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $50, with the ticket price supporting SPIN fellowships.
