Awarded Proposals

  • Makan Fardad, EECS, received an award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for “A Scalable Optimization-Based Framework for Modeling and Analysis of Cascading Failures: CAREER”.

Funding Opportunities

For Faculty:

Cyberinfrastructure for Sustained Scientific Innovation- Data and Software(NSF)

  • Apr 18; The Cyberinfrastructure for Sustained Scientific Innovation (CSSI) umbrella program encompasses the long-running Data Infrastructure Building Blocks (DIBBs) and Software Infrastructure for Sustained Innovation (SI2) programs, as NSF seeks to enable funding opportunities that are flexible and responsive to the evolving and emerging needs in data and software cyberinfrastructure.

Scientific Discovery through Advanced Computing: Runaway Electron Avoidance and Mitigation in Tokamak Plasmas (DOE)

  • May 14; The goal of this FOA is to select applications that can take advantage of today’s multi-petascale DOE high-performance computing (DOE HPC) systems to accelerate scientific discovery in a strategically important area of magnetic fusion energy science and address high-priority issues identified in recent community studies.

Air Force Office of Scientific Research, Young Investigator Research Program (DOD)

  • Jun 1; The program objective is to foster creative basic research in science and engineering; enhance early career development of outstanding young investigators; and increase opportunities for the young investigator to recognize the Air Force mission and related challenges in science and engineering.

Future of Work at the Human – Technology Frontier: Advancing Cognitive and Physical Capabilities (NSF)

  • Jun 4; This solicitation focuses on advancing cognitive and physical capabilities in the context of human-technology interactions. The solicitation will support two themes: Theme 1 will focus on Foundations for Augmenting Human Cognition and Theme 2 will focus on Embodied Intelligent Cognitive Assistants.

Planning Grants for Engineering Research Centers (NSF)

  • Jun 6; The goal of the ERC program has been to integrate engineering research and education with technological innovation to transform and improve national security. NSF is interested in using ERCs to develop engineered systems, which, if successful, will have a high societal impact.

CubeSat-based Science Missions for Geospace and Atmospheric Research (NSF)

  • Jun 13; The overarching goal of the program is to explore creative and low-cost ways to provide space measurements for scientific research. The program will execute small scientific satellite missions to advance space and atmospheric research. Equally important, it will provide essential opportunities to train the next generation of experimental space scientists and aerospace engineers. The program will support the development, construction, launch, and operation of small satellite systems as well as the distribution and analysis of the science data from the missions.

Management and Operation of the Advanced Modular Incoherent Scatter Radar (AMISR) Facilities at Poker Flat, AK, and Resolute Bay, Canada (NSF)

  • Jun 13;In contrast, the Poker Flat Incoherent Scatter (PFISR) and Resolute Bay Incoherent Scatter Radar-North (RISR-N), which make up the NSF-AMISR facility, were the first ISR systems supported by NSF that were specifically designed and constructed for basic research in the Geospace sciences. While the older ISR facilities are characterized by massive antenna structures and powerful, centralized transmitters, each AMISR observatory uses a phased array modular design with a large number of identical electronic subsystems.

Dear Colleague Letter: Space Weather Operations-to-Research Proposals (NSF)

  • The National Space Weather Action Plan (SWAP) released by the National Science and Technology Council describes actions that are needed to improve the understanding of, forecasting of, and preparedness for space weather events. An overarching theme of the SWAP is the need for collaboration amongst the research and operational communities.

Dear Colleague Letter: Achieving New Insights through Replicability and Reproducibility (NSF)

  • The current DCL encourages the submission of proposals that use replication, reproduction and generalization for the purpose of testing new ideas. Research questions should fall within the content domain of any of the following NSF programs: Cognitive Neuroscience, Perception, Action, and Cognition, and Science of Learning.
  • The suggested research must demonstrate clear potential for generating new scientific advances and discoveries.

For Students:

ACM SIGHPC/Intel Computational

  • Apr 30; ACM SIGHPC and Intel have partnered to create Computational and Data Science Fellowships, a 5-year program to increase the diversity of students pursuing graduate degrees in data science and computational science. Specifically targeted at women or students from racial/ethnic backgrounds that have not traditionally participated in the computing field, the program is open to students pursuing degrees at institutions anywhere in the world. The 2018 cohort of students will be the third cohort of students.

DOE Office of Science Graduate Student Research Program

  • May 15 ; The goal of the Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) program is to prepare graduate students for science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) careers critically important to the DOE Office of Science mission, by providing graduate thesis research opportunities at DOE laboratories.
  • The SCGSR program provides supplemental awards to outstanding U.S. graduate students to pursue part of their graduate thesis research at a DOE laboratory/facility in areas that address scientific challenges central to the Office of Science mission.
